Avey Tare (Dave Portner of Animal Collective) released Down There in October 2010. Though he had previously released other non-Animal Collective work on Crumbling Land, the Living Bridge compilation, and Pullhair Rubeye with Kria Brekkan, Down There marks Dave's official solo record debut. During interviews conducted upon the album's release last year, Dave seemed set on not touring with this material due to the nature of each song's material. However, an unexpected solo tour was announced for this winter. We caught his show at the Knitting Factory in Brooklyn.
Avey played a combination of new songs and Down There songs. Unlike everything else with Animal Collective, Evan and I had decided to not spoil the set list for ourselves prior to the show. It was a real treat not knowing what to expect in the set list and how the Down There songs would sound in their reworked forms. Additionally, the crowd was surprisingly respectful when it came to the new songs. At past shows involving anyone from AC, unfamiliar songs usually spark annoying audience chatter. At least where we were during Avey's set, the crowd was pretty good!
With the help of Dan from nyctaper (check out their incredible recordings at http://www.nyctaper.com), we had originally planned to do a soundboard recording of the show. However, before the show started, Dave said that he did not want a soundboard recording of the show being distributed because it would be a misrepresentation of the sound, which was completely understandable. Luckily, Dan helped us find a great spot to record the show from on the floor.
The set combined four songs from Down There with five new songs. 3 Umbrellas and Lucky 1 each were reworked and had there pace changed for the live show; the new songs fit right in by continuing the swampy, confessional themes of Down There while adding in more beats than are present on the record.
The names of the tracks in quotations are temporary titles, as they are unreleased songs, though with the help of another CA member we were able to get the actual titles for the other three new songs he played (Song For Jerome, In Photographs, Death Raga). We hope that you all enjoy this recording as much as we do!
