Born Ruffians played Santos Party House in New York City on June 19th, 2010 with Motive and Young Rival as openers. This was our second time seeing Born Ruffians (the first was when they opened up for Vampire Weekend at SummerStage 2008 in Central Park and we immediately were hooked) and it was the first recording we did at a show.
I used the Zoom H2 set to use the rear/120 degrees mics with low gain and we stood in the middle of the venue to form an equilateral triangle with the speakers. The internal microphones on the Zoom are solid but since it was our first time using the Zoom at a show, I was not familiar with the extra features I could have used to make the recording sound even better. It is also music that we rarely see live; we typically see bands that use more electronic, sample based, and bass sounds, not amplified guitar and whatnot. The crowd noise was also extremely high at this show, as everyone was singing along, but its inclusion should not act as a distraction to the listener but rather serve to recreate the atmosphere that filled Santos Party House that evening.
A full download link of Born Ruffians' set is available following the photographs, as is a preview of their song "Barnacle Goose".
